Indivisible Baltimore endorses Ben Jealous and Susie Turnbull

Candidates’ Commitment to Baltimore Communities is Critical

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND – Indivisible Baltimore — a locally organized group resisting the Trump agenda — endorses Ben Jealous and Susie Turnbull for Governor and Lieutenant Governor of Maryland.

Ben Jealous draws upon a rich family history in Baltimore, where his mother grew up in the McCulloh Homes public housing complex and his parents met as anti-segregation activists in the 1960s. He has carried on their dedication to social justice, including as President and CEO of the NAACP and founding director of Amnesty International’s U.S. Domestic Human Rights Program. Susie Turnbull has been a leader in the Democratic Party both nationally and in Maryland, where she has encouraged diversity among candidates. Jealous announced his candidacy in Baltimore last year, and he and Turnbull received over 43% of primary votes in the City.

“Indivisible Baltimore is committed to a safe and healthy Maryland for all, including those who live in places Larry Hogan would rather ignore because they didn’t vote for him,” said Jennay Ghowrwal. “On this ticket, we have a team that has spent their careers organizing people to achieve progressive change for people of color, the poor, immigrants, and LGBTQ Marylanders.”

Jealous and Turnbull are passionate, inspiring candidates who envision an inclusive economy, healthcare for all, and a thriving education system. They support police reform and welcome immigrants. These candidates could not offer a sharper contrast to our current administration, which opens Maryland’s doors to dangerous Trump policies and closes them to those fleeing crisis across the globe.

“Larry Hogan is not moderate: he vetoed workers’ paid sick leave and voting rights for citizens on parole, tried to ban Syrian refugees, supports Betsy DeVos’s school privatization agenda, is against a minimum wage increase, and cancelled the much-needed Baltimore Red Line transportation project,” said Monisha Cherayil. “Our communities deserve a governor who stands for compassion and a vision for a better Maryland — not someone who blocks progressive legislation and parrots many of Trump’s hateful ideas.”

Since forming in January 2017, Indivisible Baltimore has hosted town halls, met with members of Congress to urge them to use hardball tactics to resist Trump, coordinated trips to Virginia and Pennsylvania to canvass for Democratic candidates, phone-banked to save Obamacare, lobbied our state legislators to expand voting rights by passing Automatic Voting Registration legislation, and much more. We have worked with other local groups representing a variety of communities that make up Baltimore, especially those most vulnerable to Trump and Republicans’ actions under this presidential administration. We look forward to supporting the Jealous-Turnbull campaign by bringing Baltimore to the table and out to the polls.
